Touching is the document of a performance undertaken by Frances Barrett at the National Gallery of Australia during the installation period of Mike Parr’s major survey, Foreign Looking. Wearing the pink knitted glove worn by Parr after his 1977 performance Cathartic Action; Social Gestus No 5, Frances moves through Foreign Looking touching the artworks, the walls, the equipment and the display units of the institution with her gloved fingers. Touching captures the NGA in a time of transition and animates archival material through performance, in turn, the institution becomes a site for tactility, motion, fluidity and embodiment.
